Solomon Shiferaw became 21st in the mass sprint of the first stage of the Tour of Qinghai Lake. The 133 km circuit race in the city centre of Xining was won by Australian Aaron Kemps.

The fast race with spectators lined up along the total 15 km circuit became a mass sprint after the 7 rider break-away was caught back. There were a few crashes, one of them involved Loh Sea Keong and Xing Yan Dong, but without damage they could return to the peloton after a hard chase. The Marco Polo Cycling Team was racing well together and looked good and fit, ready for the upcoming stages.

In the mass sprint Solomon was being pushed away several times, with his light build body it is hard to keep position against the bumps and pushes from the big sprinters. The team is now 11th in team GC.
