The third stage of the Tour of Qinghai Lake started fast with many break-away attempts. The Marco Polo Cycling Team riders were very active. Chinese Xing Yan Dong attacked and was away for some time. Nick Mitchell was in a very strong group for a while. But it was Jan Kuyckx who choose the right moment. After a split up of the field in several echelons at the windy borders of the Qinghai Lake the groups came together again. That was the moment of the winning break-away. Gruzdev from Kazachstan and Gazdova from Pertutnina Ptuj got away and Jan had to find some room for his attack. He almost caught on but then was within half a minute of the two for several kilometres. They got some decent time on the peloton, but Jan just didn't catch on with the winning break. He rode solo for the third place, but in the final 20 kilometres the peloton split up in several echelons and the speed was so high that he got caught back at only 7 kilometres to go. A great attempt, but he just didn't make it. The two other riders made and took over the general classification, now leading with more then 1 minute.
