Marco Polo Cycling Donckers Koffie team rider Chris Macic finished in 6th place at Woensdrecht this weekend, using the race to test his legs after suffering with a virus during the previous week. The virus had made its way round the team house and left Matt Green and Chris Bartlett out of action. They were both at home with the heating turned up to 11, sporting 6 jumpers, chewing on raw garlic, infusing their tea with ginger and eating as much spicy food as they could handle, because, as everyone knows, that's how you get rid of colds. Fast.

The race itself was contested over 40 laps of a 2.5 km circuit in west of the Netherlands. Around 100 riders took to the startline and there was much jostling for position early on in the race, eventually a small break got away and they built up a lead of 45 seconds. They were working well together, but the fast moving bunch neutralised their advantage with 10 laps to go. As the pace in the bunch eased many riders started attacking, and 10 riders including Macic got away shortly after. With 5 laps to go the break began playing games and Macic was often left to work as riders let strategic gaps open. He managed to bring it back many times and attacked over the top several times, but with the virus leaving him a little below par, a few riders got a gap with a few laps to go and Chris was left to bring it home for 6th place. The other riders are now over their early season illnesses, training hard and building on their form for the upcoming races!
